Declan Rice clarifies his decision not to celebrate after scoring in England's victory against Ireland
Declan Rice, the England midfielder, has explained his decision not to celebrate after scoring the second goal in England's 3-0 away victory over Ireland in a friendly.
"It was a difficult game for me personally," Rice said. "I have a lot of friends and family in Ireland, so it was a tough decision to make. I decided that I would not celebrate if I scored, as a mark of respect to them.
Rice, who was born in London but qualifies to play for Ireland through his grandparents, has previously represented Ireland at youth level. He switched allegiance to England in 2019, but still has close ties to Ireland.
Rice's decision not to celebrate was praised by many, including Ireland manager Mick McCarthy. "I thought it was a great gesture from Declan," McCarthy said. "It shows that he is a respectful young man.
